To Be or Not To Be - Drama Competition

The most profound question a director is faced with when tackling the meticulous
execution of a drama often revisits the perpetual question of existence as proposed by
Shakespeare's Macbeth. The re-creation of emotional encounters that are genuine and
sincere are often award-winning, when placed into the hands of a talented director. This
category places emphasis on films that are the product of a talented director's high
conceptualization of a story, resulting in the construction of an emotionally charged
reality. Films which inspire content in this category may include;
AMERICAN BEAUTY,
THELMA AND LOUISE, MILLION DOLLAR BABY, STRANGER THAN PARADISE,
SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN, DO THE RIGHT
THING etc.

Bloody Night- Horror/Thriller Competition

As night falls many often feel slightly uncomfortable when roaming the streets alone at
night. This discomfort is often triggered by a perpetual influx of myths and stories that
have been instilled within us since the conception of time. Film is one of the most
powerful mediums which brings these myths, legends and possible truths to life. This
category is in search of films that have the potential to instill fear within the viewer or at
least to possibly cure a bad case of hiccups. Blood and gore are embraced but
psychological elements of fear should not be omitted. A combination of the two is often
effective enough to make Dracula himself think twice about going out night. Stellar
horror/thriller films to consider for inspiration include;
THE EXORCIST, SEVEN, Michael
Jackson's THRILLER, AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN PARIS, PSYCHO.

Strange Brew- Experimental Competition

In order to challenge our regulatory thought processes and to push the imagination
beyond established boundaries, an experimental concoction is always desired. This
category sets forth to crush boundaries- there are none. Films that fall into the realm of
the anti-Hollywood are appropriate for this category. Both ambiguous and narrative films
are welcome to present themselves on the same platform as long as the work is
demonstrative of presenting an unprecedented strive for innovation.

Fast, Quick or Dead-Action Competition

The infatuation with action films stems from one's untapped desire to rebel against the
morals and values that society has instilled within us. The majority of us exist in this
state but only as a result of outward politeness towards those that surround us. This
category seeks films that dismiss the polite nature of reality and indulge in a world of
unabashed behavior exemplified through action. Films that fuel some inspiration in this
category include;
FALLING DOWN, ROCKY, ROBOCOP, RESERVOIR DOGS, FULL
METAL JACKET, THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY.

Director’s Perception –Genre Fusion Competition

Films that fuse a variety of genres into their construction deserve to be recognized in a
category that promotes them in an innovative light. Genre infused film is often the result
of a director's refusal to remain  within the perimeters  of an established genre and
stylistic elements that extend beyond these perimeters are brought into play. The
versatility of films in this category is endless and many often consider films infused from
a multitude of genres to be mind blowing when exceptionally executed. Films that
exemplify the fusion of genres include;
BRAZIL, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE
SPOTLESS MIND, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS.

The Outer Realm- Sci-Fi/Fantasy Competition.

Super- freaky, beyond the scope of Earthly reality, this category sets forth to
incorporate little men from mars, gnomes, trolls and other unidentifiable creatures while
showcasing both B-films and fantasy/sci-fi epics on the same platform. Avant-garde
futurism as in Fritz Lang's
METROPOLIS, WAR OF THE WORLDS or THE FIFTH
ELEMENT
, or B-movie freakiness as in Ed Wood's PLAN  9 FROM OUTER SPACE are
sought. Sci-fi humour as showcased in Tim Burton's
MARS ATTACKS! may also be
added into the mix!
